A High School Reader's Fan Notes

High school sophomore Felecia Johnson just read an early copy of Dead Rules and sent me an email.   Felecia took Sarah Andersen's "Young Adult Lit" course at Clio (Michigan) High School last trimester. See Sarah's super cool teaching-Y.A. webpage here: Y.A. Love.

Excerpts (with permission) from Felecia's comments: "Dead Rules is an awesome book. I love love love love love it. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. How'd you come up with the plot? Wow, it was amazing. :) I'm like Team Sliders... if that makes sense. The Sliders are more... interesting, and I can relate to them... sorta... personally."

I learned earlier this week that Dead Rules received a STARRED Kirkus Review! I'll link it here once it's available online. Or you can read it on my Dead Rules Reviews page. You cannot believe how happy that made me. Yet, it made me even happier to hear from Felecia.

Because she enjoyed the book, for one. Because my protagonist is a female high school student, for another. Because Kirkus Book Reviews are written by adults and they don't really let YA authors know whether teens will like a book or not. And because I am sorta Team Sliders, too.

Short version: Sliders are the bad kids in Dead School (the setting I created in Dead Rules). It tickles me to no end that a reader is rooting for them. Me, too. And, face it, I was one. Maybe still am.

Thank you, Felecia! And thank you, Sarah Andersen, for providing your students with current Young Adult titles to read!

Love the Kirkus starred review, and love the fan notes just as much! Both are definitely great votes of confidence for your book! :)
